Green Shed Project
The project was set up in 2004. It’s main aim was to give people practical opportunities to engage with environmentally friendly practice – to help divert items from landfill. These items include furniture, textiles, glass, paper and garden waste. We also have a Community Garden Centre based at the Roe Valley Hospital run in partnership with Benbradagh Resource Centre.
Furniture
We collect unwanted items from the general public which we sell at our 2 shops. The shops are called “Refurnish” and are based at Cannings Complex, Ballyclose st, Limavady (028 777 65798) and 8 New Market st, Coleraine (028 7035 4621). This allows us to attain the highest point of the recycle pyramid, “Reuse” of items. All items are keenly priced. We offer a delivery service as well. If you wish to donate any household item contact either of our shops. Collection is usually free as long as the items donated have a retail value. We have plans in the pipeline to open another shop in Derry in 2010.
Textiles
We collect clothing from households , usually alongside furniture collection. The general public can take unwanted clothing to our shops. Items that we cannot resell will be recycled to a reputable company. We will hopefully be starting a door to door collection service in 2010.
Glass
This collection is offered to community groups and private business. The service is free to any community group who wish to put mobile recycling points at their premises. Limavady Council should be contacted if you require this facility as they install the units. There is a small cost to private companies. All glass is recycled to a local company.
Paper/Cardboard
You can arrange to get these items picked up by Greenshed by contacting 028 777 65438 and ask to speak to Kieran. We currently lift these items from business/schools/community outlets. There is a charge for the service if you are a private business. We also lift office furniture from statutory/private organisations.
Garden Centre
For the last 3 years we have been operating a Community Garden Centre in partnership with Benbradagh Resource Centre at the Roe Valley Hospital, Limavady. Our efforts are aimed at encouraging adults with learning disabilities to assist in the production, care and selling of all plants for your garden. These include Spring/Summer bedding, shrubs, trees etc. Hanging baskets and tubs are also made to order. Various bulbs are available in Autumn. There are Holly wreaths and table centres available for Xmas. You can also bring your grass cuttings and small branches to our centre to help with our onsite compost project.
Volunteering in Green Shed
We rely on the services of people who have volunteered to help in the running of the project from the beginning. If you would like to give it a go as a :
